In July the kids and I took a trip to my parents' house. It was on that trip that we found some caterpillars. We gave them a home, fed them, talked to them and watched them get fat. Then those caterpillars made their cacoons in our big glass jar. We waited for them to emerge as butterflies. We waited and waited and waited and WAITED...finally I was tired of the jar sitting on my counter so I put it on top of the fridge. Several times I was tempted to throw them out. But, because I had read that sometimes they wait through the winter I didn't. Thank goodness I didn't. On Tuesday afternoon while getting some ice out of the fridge I heard some rustling. I looked and couldn't believe we had two big butterflies!
Here is one of the caterpillars we found growing on my mom's parsley plant. We ended up finding about 6 caterpillars.
At first we put them in a jar, but realized that with 6 of them we needed a bigger home.
Here is the upgraded home!
Here is one of our beautiful butterflies. They are black swallowtails.
This is one right before we let it go.
There are still two more butterflies who haven't emerged yet. I guess we will keep waiting for them!
